Techneek of the Week - Juli's Technique

So this very rad Techneek was created by our very own Juli, and was even the topic of discussion on the Ranger blog for a snippet in time! Ooh...aah!!

This week I am going to show you how to take an acrylic shape and some Ranger products and make a super-rad stained glass effect! This is one of those techniques that was born out of an experiment, and just goes to show that the more you play with your supplies, the better!

Supplies needed:

  • A plastic shape (I used a Maya Road flower)
  • Alcohol ink (I used Stone Wash)
  • Ranger's Perfect Pearls in a similar colour to the alcohol ink
  • A clean and fluffy paintbrush to apply your Perfect Pearls
  • Glossy Accents

  • As per most of my techniques, the first step is to protect your workspace and your clothes. We are using alcohol ink in this technique, which will stain your clothes and table.

You will need to move quickly between steps one and two, so make sure you have your Perfect Pearls and clean paintbrush at the ready!

Step One: Apply Alcohol Ink directly on to your plastic shape, to the side you want facing up. You can do it a little at a time, or all at once. The alcohol ink doesn't dry immediately, so you do have a little bit of time to get your Perfect Pearls on.

Step Two: While the ink is still wet, apply the Perfect Pearls all over the shape. Don't put your brush into the wet ink. Just fill your brush with powder and tap the brush over top. Wait until the alcohol has dried before you move to step three.
This is what it will look like with the Perfect Pearls on the alcohol ink. (Still wet)

If you want, you can stop here and skip the Glossy Accents step. This will give you a different effect...a kind of matte, shimmery, distressed looking shape. This is what it looks like once the ink has dried.

Step Three: Apply Glossy Accents all over the shape, and don't be stingy! Really get it on there!

This is going to take FOREVER to dry, so just let it sit and don't touch it or test it or check...just leave it! You will be able to see when it is dry, as it will turn from cloudy to clear.

    Still drying...

The glossy accents will crack as it dries, and the cracks might even change colour, but that is part of the technique.

Try this on different shapes, with different colours of ink and Perfect Pearls.
Try this on a metal shape.
    Try this on chipboard.
Try adding drops of two or three colours of alcohol ink with a neutral Perfect Pearls.

The finished product WITHOUT Glossy Accents

Anf WITH Glossy Accents! Notice how there's a little bit of pink inthe finished shape? I found that with the Lettuce alcohol ink and green perfect pearls, you get a little brown develop. It's just a super side effect!
As far as I can tell, it is the Perfect Pearls that makes the Glossy Accents crack. So if you just add alcohol ink to a shape, then cover with Glossy Accents, I don't think you would get the same effect...prove me wrong!!

And I am totally having deja vu as I write this post, so if I have already posted this as a Techneek, oops!
